Important Notice: Beware of Rental Scams in Singapore and Protect Your Rights
To all students:
Recently, there have been successive rental scams targeting Chinese international students in Singapore. A total of 128 students have been victimized, with losses exceeding S$500,000.
Fraudsters use "low-priced listings" and "long-term rental discounts" as bait to trick victims into paying several months to a full year’s rent plus deposit in one lump sum. They then force evictions, disappear with the money, and cause severe financial losses to students.
To ensure your safety, the College solemnly reminds everyone:
- Beware of low-price traps: Listings significantly below market price are mostly scams. Do not pursue small bargains.
- Refuse large upfront payments: Do not pay half a year or a full year’s rent at once. Pay monthly or quarterly whenever possible.
- Verify agent credentials: All legitimate agents must be registered with Singapore’s CEA (Council for Estate Agencies). Always verify their name and license number on the official website (cea.gov.sg) before signing.
- Formal contract + in-person viewing: Never make any payment without meeting the landlord/agent, inspecting the property, and verifying their identity documents.
- Keep all evidence: Save contracts, transfer records, chat history, and copies of identification documents.
- Report to police immediately if scammed: If you face threats, forced eviction, or loss of contact, call 999 right away.
Be extremely careful with rentals. Safety always comes first.
