B.   Overview

The General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE’O’ level) Examination is a UK qualification examination jointly administered by The Ministry of Education, Singapore and University of Cambridge International Examination (CIE) which are usually taken by students at the age of fifteen to sixteen. The GCE ‘O’ level provides a foundation for for students to further their study or employment.

The objective of the course is to enable the students to acquire the academic knowledge and skills of the subjects offered i.e. English, Elementary Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics and Principles of Accounts so that students are prepared to take the General Certificate of Education Ordinary level examination administered by Singapore Education and Assessment Board in collaboration with the Cambridge International Examination.

Able to pursue their Higher education in Singapore by qualifying for the entry requirements into Polytechnics in Singapore, Junior Colleges, and to any private Institutions in Singapore offering various diploma and degree courses.

C.   Objective

The objective of the course is to enable the students to acquire the academic knowledge and skills of the subjects offered i.e. English, Elementary Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics and Principles of Accounts so that students are prepared to take the General Certificate of Education Ordinary level examination administered by Singapore Education and Assessment Board in collaboration with the Cambridge International Examination.

a. Course Outline

The course consists 5 no. of subjects as follows:

  1. English

b. Elementary Mathematics

c. Additional Mathematics

d. Physics

e. Principles of Accounts

English

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:

Speak and write using correct grammar at word, sentence and text

  1. Levels using a wide range of vocabulary with suitable register and tone
  2. Show clear organization of development of ideas in their spoken and written texts
  3. Identify main ideas and details in spoken texts as well as take notes
  4. Understand visual and written text genres at literal, inferential and evaluative levels and evaluate their use of language for purpose and impact
  5. Speak and write appropriately in response to written, spoken and visual texts
  6. Speak and read aloud clearly using correct pronunciation, pace, tone and stress

Elementary Mathematics (E-Maths)

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:

  1.    Understand and apply mathematical concepts and skills in various contexts
  2.    Formulate and solve problems by data organization and analysis, application of appropriate solution techniques and interpretation of mathematical results
  3.    Use mathematical explanations and arguments to make inferences and solve higher order thinking problems

Additional Mathematics (A-Maths)

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:

  1. Understand and apply mathematical concepts and skills in various contexts
  2. Formulate and solve problems by information analysis, data organization and analysis, application of appropriate solution techniques and interpretation of mathematical results
  3. Solve higher order thinking problems and make inferences
  4. Reason and communicate mathematically by writing mathematical explanation, arguments and proofs

Physics

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific phenomena, definitions and theories; scientific vocabulary related to physics with its particular terminology & conventions; scientific instruments & apparatus; and scientific applications with their implications on society, economy &environment
  2. Select, organise and present information in written, symbolic, graphical and numerical forms as well as manipulate, and translate the information from one form to another
  3. Identify patterns, report trends and draw inferences
  4. Present reasoned explanations for phenomena, patterns and relationships
  5. Make predictions and hypotheses to solve problems

Principles of Accounts

At the end of this course, the students should be able to:

  1.    Know and understand the general accounting environment; accounting theories; the accounting information system and its methodology; and the basic forms and practices of business entities
    apply the double entry system of recording business transactions,
    organise accounting information into ledgers and financial statements
  2.    Analyse and interpret financial statements including the effects of accounting transactions on them
    evaluate businesses for their profitability, liquidity and inventory management
  3. Develop values and attitudes of integrity, objectivity and social responsibility in the context of accounting.

Age

At least 14 years old

Academic Qualification:

Completed Secondary 2 education from Singapore Government School or 8 years of formal education or equivalent.

Language Proficiency

Passed English at Secondary 2 or 8 years of formal education or IELTS 4.0 or equivalent.
