B.   Overview

Post-Graduate Diploma in Management and Leadership (Mandarin) integrates modern business management skills and knowledge essential to efficiently manage a business, or in business development. The business industry continuously faces varied and dynamic challenges and opportunities.

C.   Objective

The course is designed to develop learners with business knowledge and skills who are operational, business executives and those who aspire to develop themselves for supervisory and managerial careers in operation and business management or administration.

Learners will develop the understanding of the required skills and practices and what is required for effective management of operation and business in Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). Adopt a theoretical as well as practical approach to develop skills for practices for managing business and operations and resolving tactical issues in their work environment.

Learners will also develop the understanding of skills and practices of what is required to be a competent and professional manager to lead and manage a team of employees and to deliver work objectives meeting enterprise outcomes. Adopt a theoretical and practical approach to lead and motivate teams to work and improve towards positive organisational culture for effective business execution and systematic processes.

Learners will develop the understanding of the required skills in gathering and analysing strategic information for enabling an actively learning environment and effectively working out organisations’ strategic objectives.

Developing Strategic Management and Leadership Skills

The aim of this module is to investigate how current thinking on leadership influences an organization’s planning to meet current and future leadership requirements. Learners will gain an insight into the current thinking on leadership from an organizational perspective. This module will enable learners to research a range of management and leadership development methods and evaluate them in meeting the skills requirements for effective leadership.

Professional Development for Strategic Managers

This module is designed to enable learners to take responsibility for their learning and development needs to gain the personal and professional skills needed to support the strategic direction of an organisation. Learners can achieve this through analysing their current skills and preparing and implementing a personal development plan.

Learners will conduct a skills audit to evaluate the strategic skills they need to meet current and future leadership requirements and then use it to identify their preferred learning style.

Learners will need to dem0nstrate that they have a regularly updated and realistic personal development plan that fits with their preferred learning style. This unit will also enable learners to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of their learning against the achievement of strategic goals and their chosen career path.

Developing Successful Business Teams

This module is designed to understand the characteristics of a successful business team and how to motivate team members to achieve their stated goals, how to resolve team conflicts and improve team communication, and to better monitor and accomplish organizational goals.

Strategic Change Management

Strategic change management is most effective when an organization actively seeks the participation of all relevant stakeholders. A change management strategy will be effective only if it has the support of all stakeholders.

Strategic change impacts on the human resources structure of the organization and this often means a restructuring of the workforce or changes in working practices. Learners will develop an understanding of the models of strategic change and the role that stakeholders play in this process. They will then examine the need for change in a selected organization and plan the implementation of a model for change.

Organizational Behaviour

The aim of this module is to develop a student’s understanding of the influence culture, politics and power have on the behaviour of others in an organizational context. Students will be in a position to apply the principles of organizational behaviour to a variety of business situations.

Marketing Principles

This is a broad based module which gives learners the opportunity to apply the key principles of marketing. This module looks at the definitions of marketing, and what is meant by a marketing orientation and the marketing process, environmental analysis in marketing and carry out their own analyses at both macro and micro levels.

The module looks at he main elements of both the original and the extended marketing mix.

Learners will develop their own marketing mixes to meet the needs of different target groups. This includes considering the differences when marketing services opposed to goods.

Business Decision Making

This module gives learners the opportunity to examine a variety of sources and develop techniques in relation to four aspect of information: data gathering, data storage, and the tools available to create and present useful information.

Learners will gain an appreciation of information systems currently used at all levels in an organization as aids to decision making.

Business Strategy

The aim of this module is to develop students’ awareness of the different kinds of strategy which could be used in an operational, tactical or strategic role for an organization. This will be underpinned by a thorough knowledge and understanding of the theories, models and concepts which could significantly support an organization’s strategic choice and direction.

Research Methods for Strategic Managers

This module is designed to introduce learners to the techniques and methods required to carry out formal research. The module addresses a variety of research methodologies.

Learners will be required to propose a unique research question related to an area of professional business practice that interests them and will add to their professional development. They will carry out a literature review of the topic, critically evaluating its relevance to their research question.

Learners will understand the techniques, both quantitative and qualitative, used in research to analyse data. They will select an appropriate research methodology for their question, and record and present their findings. Tutor approval should be sought before learners begin their research and their final report should be presented in a format agreed by the tutor.

  • Learn through lectures and knowledge sharing among tutors and students in prevalent business knowledge and skills, learn relevance of business operations and administration processes in a typical SME organisations, through case studies and evaluate practices for reflections in SME environment of running businesses in Asia context. Learners are encouraged to link learning to their work environment
  • Learn through sharing of the best practices from local invited guests as requirement to effectively operate in business world in Asia
  • Learn through class discussions and from various sources in analysing prevalent business situations and various scenario
  • Learn through working out and writing business plan and through practice and own reflection, using adaptive skills to respond and steer business out of crises in global disruptive situations.

 E.   Entry Requirements

Age:   At least 22 years old

Academic:   A university degree recognized in Singapore, Commonwealth, ASEAN

countries or China.

Mature candidates over 30 years of age and at least 8 years relevant working experience  but do not posses the require qualifications may also be considered.

Language Proficiency:   At least a C6 for GCE ‘O’ Level Chinese or equivalent or completion of Secondary school.
